Preparing to Start your First Business?

It’s never too late to start!

It’s time to take the idea you’ve been dreaming about and turn it into a thriving business.

Whether you’re planning to launch in the next few months or have just started trading, setting strong foundations now will make all the difference to your future success.

1. Clarify your Vision & goals

Start your business with a clear purpose.

Ask yourself: Why am I starting this business? What problem am I solving?

Once you know your ‘why’, set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) for your first 6, 12 and 24 months.

These goals will guide your decisions and keep you focused when challenges arise.

Our tip: Write down your top 3 goals for the next 12 months with an action plan to achieve each. Revisit these regularly to stay on track.

2. Understand your Legal and Financial responsibilities

Getting the basics right from day 1 is essential.

  • Register your business correctly with HMRC/Companies House (depending on your business structure – read our blog here to understand the different company types you could choose).
  • Open a dedicated business bank account to separate personal and business finances.
  • Familiarise yourself with your tax obligations and compliance requirements.

Mistakes here can lead to costly penalties later.

3. Know your Market

Your business idea is only strong if there is a gap in your intended market.

  • Research your target audience: Who are they? What do they need?
  • Analyse your competitors: What are they doing well? Where can you stand out?
  • Define your Unique Selling Point (USP) – what makes you different? Why would a customer choose you over a competitor?

Our tip: Use free tools like Google Trends, social media insights and speak to your target audience to understand demand.

4. Plan your Finances

Financial planning is the backbone of a sustainable business.

  • Calculate your start-up costs for the first year and create a realistic budget
  • Forecast your cash flow for the first 12 months – this helps anticipate high-spending periods and seasonal dips in sales.
  • Consider setting aside an emergency fund for unexpected costs.

Good financial habits early on can prevent stress later.

5. Build your Brand

Your brand is more than your colours and logo – it’s the story you tell and the experience you create.

  • Choose a name that reflects your values and resonates with your audience. Pick something memorable!
  • Create an online presence with consistent branding: build a website, social media profiles and a store-front if relevant.

Our tip: Authenticity wins. Share your journey and engage with your followers.
